Pure Water, Vibrant Benin: Sustaining Communities’ Future

Water for Life delivers clean water in Benin through wells and model villages, ensuring every soul’s right to health, dignity.

Overview of Water for Life’s Mission - BENIN

The Water for Life Committee, established in 2005 under the guidance of His Holiness Hadhrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad, the spiritual head of the Worldwide Ahmadiyya Muslim Community, is dedicated to providing clean, potable water to underserved communities in Africa, where access to safe water is often limited. The committee’s work is grounded in the belief that clean water is a fundamental human right, not a privilege, and it strives to make this right a reality through sustainable, low-cost solutions like boreholes, wells, and water pumps. The statement “Access to clean water is not a privilege, it is a basic human right” encapsulates the committee’s ethos, aligning with global frameworks like the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goal 6 (clean water and sanitation for all).

In Benin, the Water for Life Committee has made significant strides, notably through the construction of wells in collaboration with Jamaat Ahmadiyya Benin, Borehole projects, mini solar water system installation and the development of the Model Village in Gbeyakarou. These projects aim to address water scarcity, reduce waterborne diseases, and empower communities by ensuring long-term access to clean water.

SUMMARY OF THE MINI SOLAR WATER SYSTEM INSTALLATION AT KETOU, BENIN

At the request of Amir Sahib Benin Jamaat and under the direction of the IAAAE Chairman, a Mini Solar Water System was installed at the Jalsa Salana site in Ketou, Village Oloka, following a thorough feasibility assessment.

Based on the findings and advice from the IAAAE Chairman, an engineer was dispatched to complete the project starting on 16th December, ensuring its readiness before the Jalsa Salana.

Key Achievements During Jalsa Salana Benin:

  • Four additional distribution points (each with a 2,000-liter capacity) were installed to cover critical areas such as the kitchen, dining hall, and male and female toilets.
  • The water system met the demands of the Jalsa Salana site efficiently, ensuring smooth operations and adequate water availability

Impact of the Project

The solar water system has significantly improved access to clean water for the local population of 1,500 and their 800 livestock. By eliminating the need for a 30 km round trip to fetch water, it has enhanced the quality of life and boosted agricultural and livestock productivity. The project stands as a testament to the potential of renewable energy in addressing critical water shortages and supporting rural communities sustainably. Alhamdulillah, the project fulfilled the needs of the Jalsa Salana site and continues to benefit the community daily.

BENEFITS TO THE LOCAL COMMUNITY

  • Improved Access to Clean Water A solar pump ensures a steady water supply, complemented by a 2,000-liter tank for daily and emergency use.

  • Time and Energy Savings The community no longer undertakes a 30 km journey for water, while nearby access improves livestock health and productivity.

  • Support for Agriculture and Livestock security and income. Reliable water fosters agriculture, boosts livestock management, and enhances food

  • Environmental Sustainability Solar power cuts fuel use, reduces emissions, and lowers costs.

  • Jalsa Salana Support The system meets increased water demand, improves hygiene, and reduces logistical challenges during gatherings.
